1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
5 eggs
2¼ cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
Method
- Stir shortening to soften.
- Gradually add sugar, creaming till light and fluffy.
- Blend in vanilla extract and cooled chocolate.
- Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.
- Sift together flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating after each addition.
- Bake in 3 paper-lined 9 x 1½-inch round pans in moderate oven at 350° F for 20 to 25 minutes.
